Indoor Padel in Abu Dhabi This Winter

Why Indoor Courts Still Win When the Weather Cools Down

Every October, someone at the front desk asks us the same question: “Now that it’s cooler, shouldn’t I just play outside?”

It’s a fair question. We run nine indoor courts in Abu Dhabi, so we know how that sounds coming from us. But after watching thousands of winter matches, our honest answer is this: outdoor padel in winter is lovely on the right night, and frustrating on most of the others.

The weather that makes Abu Dhabi so pleasant for a walk on the Corniche does strange things to a padel court.

What Actually Happens on an Outdoor Court in Winter

  1. The Glass Gets Wet

This is the one that catches people out. On many winter evenings, humidity climbs after sunset, and a film of moisture settles on the glass and the turf.

A damp back wall changes everything. The ball skids instead of bouncing; it comes off lower and faster, and the shot you’ve practiced all summer suddenly lands in the net.

Damp turf is worse. When your feet slide on a quick change of direction, that’s how ankles get rolled.

  1. The Shamal Picks Up

The shamal, the northwesterly wind that blows across the Gulf in winter and early spring, can turn a perfect lob into a gift for your opponents. We’ve seen gusts push a ball two or three meters off line.

One windy game is part of the fun. A whole season of windy training is another story. If you’re trying to build a reliable bandeja or a consistent serve, you can’t tell whether a miss was your technique or the weather.

  1. Dust and Low Sun

Wind brings fine dust onto the court, changing the grip under your shoes and slowing the ball. Late-afternoon winter sun sits low on the horizon, and on some court orientations it shines straight into your eyes on every overhead.

Our Honest Opinion: When Outdoor Padel Is Fine

We’re not going to pretend indoor padel is the only way to play. On a calm, dry December evening, an outdoor game with friends is one of the best parts of living in Abu Dhabi.

Outdoor courts make sense when:

  • You’re playing a relaxed social game and don’t mind the odd weird bounce
  • The forecast is calm, and the humidity is low
  • You’re not working on anything specific in your technique

Indoor padel in Abu Dhabi makes more sense when:

  • You’re training with a coach and want feedback on your strokes, not the wind
  • You have a fixed weekly game and hate cancellations
  • You play late, when the dew is at its worst
  • You’re preparing for a tournament and want the same conditions every session

For most of our regulars, the answer ends up being a mix. They play outside with friends on the odd perfect night and keep their training indoors.
